Live In The Dash

Adulting

It’s official! I’ve been “an adult” over half my life. My oldest is a high school senior and is repeatedly hearing, “What are you doing to be when you grow up?” All of this “adulting” has me reflecting on my dash—that long space on one’s headstone between birth and death.

Live In The Dash

Do It Now

In October, I heard an incredible keynote speaker—Jermaine Davis. His book, Get Up Off Your Butt & Do It Now: Stay motivated even when you don’t feel like it, struck a cord with me. He spoke of moving through your fears into action. He reminded me of all I can do in this world. I simply have to follow through and bring my goals into my reality.

Stop. Start. Continue. Now is the time to STOP sabotaging myself. Now is the time to START moving through fears and insecurities. I, of all people, have so many tools at my disposal—Brain Gym®, Educational Kinesiology, Rhythmic Movement Training, Masgutova Method, The Listening Program from Advanced Brain Technologies, Building Blocks from Movement Based Learning, Bal-A-Vis-X, Touch for Health, essential oils, herbs, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, and the list goes on…. It is in my (and everyone’s) best interest to CONTINUE so that when our time on earth comes to an end, the dash represents a life well-lived.

Fuzzy Vision

This week I had three speaking engagements, one of which was for a chiropractor who focuses on families and children. As an entrepreneur, he asked engaging questions about my business. Do I assess children? Who is my primary audience—parents, educators, other? How do I utilize technology? What do I want to do next? Eek! Tough questions that instantly bring me back to Dr. Davis’ book that is sitting on my bedstand: Get Up Off Your Butt…. I do not lounge around imbibing in TV and eating bonbons. Yet, I had an out-of-focus fuzzy vision of what I’d like to do next. Perhaps it is time to bring the vision into reality.

Live In the Dash.

That phrase seems stuck on repeat in my head. It may not be time for New Year’s resolutions but it is a changing of the seasons. My yard is full of fallen leaves. The horizon here in the swampy woods has changed and I can once again see the road. Likewise, I am ready to adjust my view and set some concrete goals:

  • Writing more. Goal: I intend to publish at least four articles before the end of 2017.
  • Exploring tech-savvy ways to reach out such as Facebook live, podcasts, videos. Goal: I create at least one video before the end of the year.
  • Return to teaching children (homeschool coops, 4-H, long-term sub). Goal: I go observe in at least one of my UWRF adult learners’ classroom environments before June, 2018.
  • Renewed commitment to clean eating. Goal: I separate my fats from carbs and refrain from sugar and gluten.

Family is a big part of my dash. My dad’s approaching birthday takes him into a new decade and my own kids are becoming young adults.

It took me two attempts to finally find my great grandma’s headstone when I drove through North Dakota; I let out a whoop of joy upon the discovery. Why did it matter? I wanted to see her dash as I relished my memories of her. I’ve been an adult over ½ my life. “How is my dash?” you ask. I’m living my dash!

Perhaps more importantly, how is your dash?
